Name: Kadaj
Canon: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Canon Point: After death
Age: Physically in his late teens.
Background: finalfantasy wiki
Personality:
Kadaj is a character who has a strong sense of determination and focus. Kadaj believes in his path regardless of what that may mean for him in the end, which ultimately means he will transform into Sephiroth (another antagonist of the series). Vincent Valentine (a supporting protagonist) defines Kadaj's existence as a larval form, to which Kadaj needs to go through a metamorphosis to be "complete." Kadaj struggles with his fate as he has a powerful sense of autonomy; he wishes to be accepted as he is. He is often seen in conflict with his trajectory and state of mind: questioning if/why he wouldn't be good enough for "Mother" to accept, and feels discord in the idea that Sephiroth is more loved than him.
"𝐼'𝑣𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑆𝑒𝑝ℎ𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑡ℎ. 𝐼 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡... 𝐼 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒 ℎ𝑖𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒. 𝐼𝑡'𝑠 𝑢𝑛𝑏𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑀𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑚𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑆𝑒𝑝ℎ𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛..." -Kadaj
Kadaj is constrained to this journey for completion as he is only a fragment derived from Sephiroth. He is described to represent Sephiroth's cruelty and insanity and was designed to convey a "psychological terror of an unstoppable child," (source). Kadaj relates to the series' antagonist, Cloud, by his role as a "puppet" for Sephiroth. He identified the significance of his sacrifice to achieve "Mother's" goals and, in that essence, demonstrated loyalty instead of disharmony in pursuing autonomy.
Kadaj can maintain a leadership role, often seen delegating orders to his older brothers: Yazoo and Loz. He manages to obtain a small army made of children and provokes direction congruent with his will. Cruelty and insanity are just a part of Kadaj, and the parts in which he represents from Sephiroth, but he has times of clarity, tact, and planning. He also has skills in manipulating others, as seen via behavior and the ability to transform his body into someone else. Kadaj demonstrates compassion by taking away someone's sense of pain from an injury. This act also could be manipulation as Kadaj redirects the pain back to the individual at a later time.
Kadaj is sensitive and commonly influenced by his emotions. He can also disconnect entirely during situations in which he no longer tolerates. For example, he talks vigorously to someone via phone, then in the next second, his demeanor changes, and his tone feels flat as he states he no longer wishes to talk to this person and asks for someone else. Kadaj does not deal well with rejection or disappointment and will often display immature behaviors appropriate for someone who has not had emotional management experiences and or training. In lesser words, Kadaj is prone to tantrums when dissatisfied. Either response represents Kadaj's intolerance for discomfort: dissociating from the situation or emotionally discharging.
"𝑀𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐺𝑜𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑛." -William Makepeace Thackeray
Kadaj is desperate for a sense of belonging, as shown with his constant search for family and his mother. He calls Loz, Yazoo, and Cloud "brother" and seeks out candidates to integrate into his family via a ritual. His family dynamic feels more like a cult situation in which the leader "mother" demands great strives from the flock. Kadaj's role, as mentioned before, is more of a puppet for someone who is not in a position to do for themselves. While his role preludes the opportunity for resurrection, it also means Kadaj's dissolve. A common factor among a cult group is sacrifice, and Kadaj is the lamb. Despite his destiny, Kadaj speaks about joining with "mother" and expediting Sephiroth's return.
"𝑀𝑦 𝑟𝑒𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑜𝑛, 𝑏𝑒𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝑑𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑐ℎ..." - Kadaj
A few reoccurring themes in the Final Fantasy 7 series are autonomy, union, identity, and rebirth. Kadaj's character has three strong portrayals of these themes within his story. The union with his family is his priority and will overwrite any self-governing desire for identity. Kadaj is successful in his goals and reunites with his mother, causing Sephiroth to be reborn. Regardless of how the end justified the means and what plans were thwarted, Kadaj is a successful villain. At Kadaj's death, we see a sense of peace overcome his expression and a willingness to joining the Lifestream. He calls out to his mother for the last time and dissolves into the Lifestream, ushered through by Aerith (a protagonist to the series). This final scene represents the completion Kadaj was looking for all along; to be accepted, to belong.
